Fettes Active Outdoor Pursuits and Leadership 2022

Find opportunities to challenge your limits

Fettes Active is a joint initiative by Fettes Enterprises and Fettes College that offers five-day sports development, outdoor pursuits and multi-activity camps for young people throughout the Easter and summer holidays. With Fettes College’s beautiful outdoor areas and its new low ropes obstacle course, the campus is the perfect setting for an outdoor pursuits camp. Additionally, our staff will make the camp challenging, rewarding and fun to enable participants to develop their leadership skills in a supportive environment.

Fettes Active is pleased to announce the launch of its first Outdoor Pursuits and Leadership camps, which will be held from 11th to 15th April and from 8th to 12th August 2022. The camps are for 12-16-year-olds and will be led by Rhys Rowlands, Head of Outdoor Pursuits at Fettes College.

Rhys and his team believe outdoor pursuits offer an incredible opportunity to find and challenge young people's limits. Preparing to tackle our climbing wall or attempting an obstacle course brings a level of self-confidence and resilience that cannot be achieved in a classroom. Linked to these opportunities are a chance to support and encourage others, as this is where we aim to unlock leadership opportunities and potential.

Following a 10-year career as a British Army Infantry Officer with operational experience around the world, Rhys has commanded and trained people beyond what they initially thought possible. As a Platoon Commander at the Army Foundation College, Harrogate, he developed the skills to motivate and develop U18 soldiers. As Head of Outdoor Pursuits at Fettes College, Rhys delivers and co-ordinates all mountaineering, paddling, climbing, cycling and skiing opportunities for the Senior school. With the incredible grounds and facilities at Fettes College, many of these are possible within the grounds. As Contingent Commander within the Combined Cadet Force, he operates within four core training strands: teamwork, leadership, communication and resilience. Rhys is passionate about promoting outdoor learning and its associated benefits. He believes that safety is paramount, but within this safe setting young people should challenge themselves to the limit. Leaving one's comfort zone is the best way to develop confidence and gain perspective about future endeavours in all avenues of life.

Find opportunities to challenge your limits

Rhys and his team encourage participants to really push themselves. This might be a daunting climbing wall or delivering a set of instructions to a group, but shying away from this opportunity doesn’t help one prepare for future difficulties. Camp participants will learn to tackle these problems as a cohesive team.
